Currently Taking Cases

We know how frustrating it can be for someone to take a medication, only to find that the medication is inherently harmful and either worsens their medical condition or directly causes another medical condition. If you believe that you’ve been harmed by Elmiron, you should strongly consider speaking with our Florida Elmiron injury lawyer today–our firm is currently taking cases.

What is Elmiron?

Essentially, Elmiron (the brand name for pentosan polysulfate sodium) is an oral prescription drug designed to help those who suffer from bladder pain associated with interstitial cystitis. For many, the drug was an effective way to relieve this pain, however, the product had certain notable and unwanted side effects.

What is the Problem With Elmiron?

To start, a few of the most common side effects associated with Elmiron are diarrhea, nausea, and hair loss. That being said, these side effects are relatively common amongst many other prescription and over-the-counter drugs, so if this is the extent of the side effects you experienced, you may not have a claim. However, there have been several reports of those who use Elmiron losing their vision either partially or entirely through an injury of the macula known as pigmentary maculopathy, and if you believe that you are visually impaired or entirely blind and you took Elmiron, there is a very good chance that you will have a valid product liability claim. In fact, roughly 25% of all people who used the drug developed this condition. This is an alarming statistic, and many injury lawyers believe it could have been easily avoided; had Elmiron simply listed pigmentary maculopathy on its warning label, many physicians wouldn’t have prescribed it in the first place.

Some of the warning signs to look out for are dark spots on the retina, blurred vision (either at close or far distances), abnormal blood vessels in the eye, and yellow lesions under the macula, to name a few.

Now, Elmiron’s warning label reads, “Pigmentary changes in the retina, reported in the literature as pigmentary maculopathy, have been identified with long-term use of ELMIRON® (see ADVERSE REACTIONS). Although most of these cases occurred after 3 years of use or longer, cases have been seen with a shorter duration of use. While the etiology is unclear, cumulative dose appears to be a risk factor,” though this is perhaps too little too late.

Recoverable Damages in an Elmiron Injury Lawsuit

As long as we can prove that you sustained serious injuries as a direct result of taking Elmiron, there is a very good chance that you may recover compensation for both economic and non-economic damages. Economic damages can help cover the cost of your medical treatment, lost wages from being unable to return to work, and more, while non-economic damages will compensate you for pain and suffering, the loss of enjoyment of life, emotional distress, and more.
